Moi: KANU Will Support Odinga

Kenya African National Union (KANU) party leader Gideon Moi says his party will not field a presidential candidate in the forthcoming General Election next year, but instead the party will support Prime Minister Raila Odinga's candidature.

Moi made the revelation on Thursday while campaigning in Ndhiwa constituency for KANU’s point-man Tom Alila ahead of Monday’s by election.

"KANU is one of the country’s strongest parties that has overwhelming support at the grassroots level and will field candidates in all other political positions apart from the presidential position," Moi said.

While addressing rallies in Homa Bay and Ndhiwa towns, Moi urged the residents of the area to continue maintaining peace before, during and after the elections.

The KANU leader said that his party will team up with Prime Minister’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to form a formidable force in the next election.

Moi’s sentiments were echoed by former Kuria lawmaker Shadrack Manga and KANU Secretary General Nick Salat who said that the party was supporting ODM because the two parties share the same school of thoughts.

The move by KANU to support ODM will see a renewed rivalry in Rift Valley where United Republican Party and its leader Eldoret North legislator William Ruto enjoys the largest support.
